Mortgage Applications Fall, Rates Rise

Mortgage applications decreased 12.6 percent last week on a seasonally adjusted basis with the index declining to 649.7 from 743.5, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

The index was adjusted to reflect the Presidents’ Day holiday. On an unadjusted basis, the index decreased 2 percent compared with the previous week and was up 6.7 percent compared with the same week on year earlier.

The refinance share of mortgage activity decreased slightly to 66.9 percent of total applications from 69.7 percent the previous week.Mortgage rates were up slightly:

* 30-year fixed-rate mortgages increased to 5.14 percent from 5.07 percent;
* 15-year fixed-rate mortgages increased to 4.73 percent from 4.71 percent;
* 1-year ARMs were unchanged at 6.13 percent.
